Have you ever experienced symptoms that no one can quite explain? Fatigue, digestive issues, or other physical discomforts that just don’t respond to traditional methods? You’re not alone.
As a hypnotherapist with over 25 years of experience, I’ve worked with many clients dealing with “mystery illnesses.” And in many cases, these unexplained symptoms have roots in the subconscious mind.
The Subconscious Mind: Your Overprotective Helper
The job of your subconscious mind is to keep you safe. But here’s the catch: it’s not logical. Sometimes, the ways it tries to protect or help you come with significant downsides—like physical symptoms that interfere with your life.
If there’s something you’re unable to do for yourself, your subconscious might take matters into its own hands. Let me share a few examples from my work to show you how this can play out.
Example 1: “The Nurturer Who Needed a Break”
One of my clients was the nurturer of her family. From a young age, she felt it was her responsibility to take care of everyone. Now, as an adult with four grown children—each going through their own crises—her subconscious decided it had had enough.
She began experiencing mystery illnesses that left her bedridden for days at a time. During our sessions, we uncovered that her subconscious was trying to “take her out of the game” so she wouldn’t have to deal with everyone else’s problems. It was the only way her subconscious could force her to take a break.
Example 2: “The Christmas Escape”
Another client dreaded spending the holidays with her family. Between her challenging son and her critical, complaining mother, she was desperate to avoid the trip. Her subconscious gave her the perfect excuse—she came down with symptoms so severe she couldn’t travel the day before her flight.
Her subconscious thought it was saving her from a difficult situation, but the downside was missing out on the holiday altogether.
Example 3: “The World Traveler Who Stayed Home”
I also worked with a client who loved to travel but grew up with very cautious parents who instilled a fear that the world was unsafe. Every time she planned a trip, she developed severe digestive issues that kept her close to a bathroom—causing her to cancel her plans.
Her subconscious believed it was protecting her from danger, even though the reality was that it was keeping her from doing something she loved.
When You Can’t Say No, Your Body Will Say It for You
If you struggle to set boundaries, assert yourself, or prioritize your needs, your subconscious may step in and create physical symptoms to “solve” the problem.
It doesn’t realize that these symptoms interfere with your enjoyment of life. All it sees is that it’s keeping you safe or helping you avoid something it perceives as a threat.
Why Traditional Approaches May Not Work
Many clients come to me after trying everything—doctors, counseling, even lifestyle changes—only to find their symptoms persisting or worsening.
Here’s why: If your subconscious believes the symptom is helping you, it will resist any effort to eliminate it. It doesn’t understand that the symptom is causing harm because it’s focused solely on the perceived benefit.
How Hypnosis Can Help
Hypnosis allows us to work directly with the subconscious mind to address these issues at their root. Here’s how it works:
1️⃣ Communicate the Downsides- In hypnosis, we can explain to the subconscious that while the symptom may seem helpful, it’s actually causing harm. This understanding can help the subconscious release its hold on the symptom. The subconscious works by association. By changing the association to the illness from a positive one (it helps me out) to a negative one (it interferes with my enjoyment of life), the subconscious is willing to let it go.
2️⃣ Identify the Need Behind the Symptom- Often, symptoms arise to meet a need the subconscious feels isn’t being addressed. For example:
Do you need to learn how to say no and set boundaries?
Are you holding onto a role, like “nurturer,” that’s no longer serving you?
Do you need more time to process decisions or prioritize your own well-being?
3️⃣ Find Healthier Solutions- Once we identify the need, we can create alternative ways to meet it—ways that don’t involve physical symptoms. For example, if the issue is boundaries, we might work on assertiveness and communication skills.
